The Greatest Mistake!

“Don’t Make a Mistake!”. That is the first thought that hits me when I start something new. The fear of making a mistake or being judged. It is a terrible way to live. It can immobilized you, and puts your life in Limbo land. Nothing changes. How do I know? It’s because I have been there. Everything remains the same as in the past. Denial and procrastination sets in. Have you ever heard the saying: If you do not plan, you plan to fail.  It’s true. Nothing gets done. Definitely, not a life I want to have now.

I was inspired when I saw the following quote on my calendar for this year.

Something to remember throughout the year.

Something to remember throughout the year.

I hope that it inspires you as well. It’s a good reminder, “The greatest mistake you can make in life is to be continually fearing you will make one.”- Elbert Hubbard.

Set your intention for this year. Have faith to move forward. Do the following:

  • Break down your goals into action steps,
  • Be accountable, and
  • Be aware of setbacks,
  • Plan ahead, strategize ways to move past obstacles, and
  • Most of all, be thankful. Remember any step you take is better than none.

Looking back over the years, I have realized that I have made plenty of mistakes. Yet, that has not stopped me from pursuing my dreams and goals for this year. I have become stronger as a result of the many trials that we have gone through. I have survived. God is so good. Now, I am excited for the possibilities, and hope you are, too. Wishing you all the best for this New Year!

Beat Stress Through Healthy Eating

Stress is a condition that makes us jittery, uneasy, and unable to sleep at night. Stress also causes us to make poor, unhealthy food choices. The good news, you can actually reduce stress by eating healthy, and this will help make you feel so much better. Here are a number of helpful hints for fighting stress, through healthy eating.

Skip The Coffee And Other Caffeinated Drinks

Coffee, caffeinated drinks and beverages can exacerbate your stress levels. While some only provide temporary relief, these affect your body in the long run, because too much sugar and caffeine increases your blood sugar levels, and also heightens your stress levels. Instead of coffee, drink green tea, since green tea contains high levels of antioxidants, and also soothes the senses.

Carry Healthy Snacks At All Times

Replace chips and other unhealthy, sodium-filled snacks with natural snack food items, and go for sunflower seeds, celery sticks and carrot sticks instead. Also bring along with you protein-rich snacks in your bag or car, to reduce fatigue and to help avoid mood swings or anxiety attacks.

Eat Breakfast, And Bring your Lunch To Work

Never go to work or school on an empty stomach. Even if you think you’re not hungry, you’ll need to eat something later on. Eating a healthy breakfast helps to maintain the proper blood sugar levels during the rest of the day. It would also be nice if you bring your lunch to work or school. You’ll actually save a lot of money by bringing your lunch to work, and you’ll also be able to eat healthier food, instead of munch on the usual fried stuff found at the fast food joint or cafeteria.

Eat Lots of Fruits And Vegetables

Eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables can help fight stress. Fruits and vegetables contain high amounts of anti-oxidants and minerals that help ward off harmful free radical damage, which is believed to increase during stress or panic attacks. Remember to choose brightly-colored fruits and veggies.

Drink More Water

To reduce stress, drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Drinking more fluids helps flush away stress-producing toxins from the body, and also helps to keep you energized. If you drink less water, your body gets thrown out of balance, and you may suffer unexplained weight gain, fluid retention, or loss of thirst, which can exacerbate any stressful situation.

Diet plays a major role in the fight against stress, therefore it’s important that you take everything you eat into consideration. Always make sure that you eat a balanced and healthy diet, and stay away from cholesterol-rich foods and saturated fats, since these tend to block the arteries with plaque. Regular exercise also helps to relieve stress. Exercise actually releases endorphins that elevate the mood, and provides an instant energy boost. Exercise also allows the body, and the mind, to relax and repair itself.

Love Italian Food?

We do! Good thing it is good for you: Olive oil, tomatoes, garlic…yum. You can eat it on a raw food diet too! Just replace the pasta with zucchini, and use a spiral slicer to cut it up like spaghetti. Read more about the benefits of Italian food here.

Challenge for the New Year

Image: Grant Cochrane / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Thumbs up for fruits and vegetables

My brother and sister-in-law challenged my husband and I to start the new year by eating a raw food diet. We have been doing it for a whole week. We started on new year day by watching a movie, and juicing our own green juice. The movie we watched is “Fat Sick and Nearly Dead”. It is a documentary about a man who went on a 60 day raw food diet. He had amazing results, and influenced others, too.

What is A Raw Food Diet?

A raw food diet consists of eating only raw foods. No, we are not eating raw meat. We are getting our protein from vegetables, nuts, and seeds. The majority of the meals consists of drinking green juice which consists of a variety of vegetables, and fruit. Through juicing we can consume a lot more vegetables and fruit than just eating them whole.

Why Go On A Raw Food Diet?

I knew that eating raw food was better than eating processed foods. Processed foods contain large amounts of sodium, which raises your blood pressure. Processed foods also contain large amounts of saturated or trans fat, which increase your cholesterol as well. I have heard about the benefits of eating raw foods from David Wolfe and others. Cooking food at high temperatures destroys the enzymes that are the life force of a food, which helps us to digest and absorb nutrients. A lack of enzymes from food is thought to lead to digestive problems, nutrient deficiency, accelerated aging, and weight gain. Doing this diet will help us cleanse our bodies from the toxins from all the processed junk foods we have eaten in the past, and help us to absorb vital nutrients necessary for a healthy lifestyle, so that we can start the new year right.

Before You Start

Please don’t start because we did. If you are on any medication or are undergoing any medical treatment, please check with your physician before starting any weight loss program. We knew we were relatively healthy, and proceeded forward, not on medication or doctor’s supervision. You may also want to ease into it, instead of going straight into only having raw. Start by replacing one meal, and see how you do. If you cannot handle one meal, then this may not be for you. It does take a lot of preparation, and it is best to make the drinks for the following day so you don’t starve while waiting for your next meal.

Our Results so Far

I wasn’t easy to start this diet, because we are so use to the routine of having coffee in the morning and eating foods that are cooked. Nevertheless, after several days of doing this our system has adjusted. We now drink decaffeinated tea, and snacking on raw nuts and seeds. Variety in the drinks has helped a lot, and trying out different raw food recipes. The results so far: I started at 112 and am now 107. I lost 5 lbs. I didn’t really need to lose weight, but just wanted to do this to cleanse my system. My husband Rodney, however needed to lose weight, and lost a total of 9 lbs. His weight started at 255 and is now 246. What keeps us going is the health benefits, and the positive results.

Start Your Day Right

Woman ready to write.

Take time in the morning to focus on positive thoughts by creating Daily affirmations. Daily affirmations are simple statements, but they can be powerful enough to change your entire attitude and outlook on life. Repeating positive mantras allows you to reprogram old, unhealthy and ineffective thoughts with new, empowering ones. It only takes a few steps to use daily affirmations effectively and make positive changes.

Positive thinking aids with stress management. Having a positive attitude is shown to have health benefits, such as reducing the risk of heart disease and lowering blood pressure. .Affirmations are statements or intentions that can be read silently or out loud in an attempt to realign thoughts and words with a positive energy

If you’re having difficulty writing your own affirmations, buy a general book of daily and nightly affirmations. There are a wide variety of affirmation books available online and in major bookstores. Some are general, while others follow a certain theme like enhancing spirituality, reducing stress or building self esteem .

If you are a Christian, this would be a good time to read , the bible, about how blessed you are as a child of God, and realize that with God all things are possible. Positive affirmations are statements that you say to yourself either out loud or internally to help reinforce that statement or belief.

Stay in positive mode. Whether you are writing or speaking your affirmations, always use positive phrases. If your goal is to lose weight, you would say, “I am thin,” versus, “I am not fat.” The subconscious mind does not relate to negative terms or words such as “not,” therefore what it picks up from “I am not fat” is “I am fat.” Therefore, you are only affirming your current situation.

After you get the hang of verbalizing your affirmations, you may want to record yourself, and play it back to yourself later in the day. Record your affirmations. Speak in a calm voice and repeat the words several times. You should record several minutes of tape.

Make a special time each day to write or meditate on positive affirmations. For some people having quiet time in the morning to say positive affirmations is the best way to make them a daily habit. For others, saying affirmations at night when the house is quiet is the best time.

Keep a list or book of positive affirmations in your bathroom. Frame positive affirmations and hang them in your bathroom. Hang pictures around your home that remind you of positive affirmations.

As you slowly approach your treadmill (or whatever you need to do),, your feet heavy with dread, plan out your walk, jog or run on the machine. Set a goal in your mind, program it into the machine, place the towel over the controls and tell yourself that you can do it. Once you step off that treadmill, celebrate your victory. Despite all of the moments in the day that you felt that it was impossible, you did it.

An affirmation is a declaration or statement of truth and being. If repeated regularly, affirmations can change the way individuals view themselves and the world …

Relationship Building Games

Girl piggybacking on guy.

Spice up the party and your relationship by being creative and engaging in romantic games that stimulate the brain as well as the body. Before choosing a game, remember to keep your relationship goals in mind. Some goals may be: building trust, intimacy, communication, flexibility, understanding, or just having fun together. Finding games online is an easy way to assemble a list of games from which to choose. Numerous resources are available.

When choosing a game for married couples or groups, first consider how many couples or players there will be. Some games are perfect for small groups of six to twelve. When playing games it will be easy to see the interaction between the couple, and notice which partner is the domineering one, and which isn’t. Or, they may be in mutual agreement for all the decisions that are made. The best games are where couples have to work together as a team, not as individuals. They need to learn and work on relating in various situations.

Try to have a game in which each person has a chance to be the decision maker, so that role reversal will take place.  The more that you practice the various roles, the more flexible one will become.  Empathy will develop this way. Such as a man changing the baby’s diaper while the woman is away at work. Sometimes it is humiliating and humbling to find out that you could not do something as well as your other half, yet in the long run, if you admit it. Wow, the intimacy and respect that comes from it is all worth it. Especially when you uplift the person in a group situation.

Some relationships, particularly romantic relationships, are susceptible to excessive dependency or a suffocating focus on the other person. Healthy relationships allow each party the freedom and space to live separate lives outside of the relationship, while knowing that the other person is there. People who attempt to dominate their partners’ time and limit their other friends are engaging in unhealthy behavior that is likely to lead to conflict. Self-confidence and trust in the other person lead to a willingness to be with him at some times and away from him at others, confident that this autonomy is not a threat to the relationship.

A relationship that isn’t built on a foundation of respect will have difficulty remaining healthy. Whether it is a relationship between lovers, friends or coworkers, if there is contempt and where there should be respect, something is very wrong. Healthy relationships are based on each person admiring the other’s qualities and respecting her choices in life. This doesn’t mean that the other person is seen as perfect; only that a feeling of respect for his existence constitutes the basis of the relationship. With this basis, arguments and disagreements can be more easily dealt with and used for personal growth.

Affection plays a part in any healthy relationship. It is most evident in a romantic relationship, in which it is commonly expressed physically, but it can be felt in any relationship in different ways. A simple enjoyment of someone’s company and concern for her welfare are the result of affection for that person. A mixture of respect and affection can form the basis for healthy and enduring relationships in which each person is as concerned about the other person as about herself, leading to a level of generosity and support within the relationship that helps to sustain everyone.

How to Reduce Existing Household Clutter

Tips for Dealing with Household  Clutter. Regular removal of clutter is an essential part of your housekeeping routine. I am guilty of contributing my share of clutter. Being an educator, I always seemed to find a way to reuse or recycle something.

Since being away from the classroom, it is getting easier to get rid of things. My kids are no longer in elementary school, and are no longer as creative with misc. stuff as they were when they were younger.  It is time to sort through the things that I no longer use.

Image: digitalart / FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Put things away

Everything is sorted

Here’s how to clean out the clutter out of your closet/room: Start at the top. Pick a shelf or a rod and take every single thing in that area out of the closet. Clean and wash out that area. Start at the top of the pile you’ve made, and start sorting …Here’s how to do it. Have four containers:  1. Trash for garbage. 2. Donations/or To Sell– Give away items  3. To Sort and put in another room within the house. 4. Storage – These are things that you might want to pass down to your children, or use later on. Put each item into the box appropriate for what you want to do with the item. If you don’t know where to put it, ask yourself if it is really necessary that you keep it. Anything that goes in the closet, goes back in the closet. Everything else, out.

The easiest thing to do is either throw extra stuff away or donate to a local charity.  I have had yard sales in the past, but not worth the time.  I have had groups of  people who would gather in front of me, distracting me, while others would go around and steal items.  Or,  they would balk at paying for something that is more than 25 cents. If you want to make money, sell on eBay or consign your items out to get a portion of the sale.

Invest any money you have made by selling your unwanted items by investing in proper storage (or spend some additional money). Depending on your household space, you might need storage boxes, shelving units, or closets in the children’s bedroom. Do not fill this extra storage space with bags of clutter and items that you do not use.

Bring boxes back inside to be sorted one last time. Organize the “Keep” boxes by putting like with like. Go through everything, as you may find that something you thought irreplaceable was actually one of ten duplicates hiding all over the house.

Are you a Pack rat? Pack rats engage in a behavior called compulsive hoarding, which is characterized by the inability to throw things away, leading to massive amounts of clutter around … Assess whether or not you are keeping items out of nostalgia. The items may remind you of a person, place or time, but it is not those things. Keeping the item does not bring the beloved back. Try to make a rule that if an item has not been touched in a specific time frame, it has to leave the house. If you still have too much, get a storage unit, but don’t leave it in the house. Freeing up the space will help you appreciate the space you have, and you will be motivated to go on to other areas of the house.

Scrub the bathrooms once they are emptied. You will need bathroom breaks during the rest of the clean-up, and it will recharge you emotionally to see a room that is completely finished.

Empty out the kitchen. Remove all obvious trash. As soon as a trash bag is filled, take it outside. Be ruthless. Unless a thing is in good working order, is valuable or is irreplaceable for sentimental reasons, it is trash.

Deal with the paper. When it comes to sorting out clutter in your household, one of the worst culprits is extraneous paper. Leftover papers are generated by everything from junk mail to notes, announcement fliers, newspapers, and magazines.

One of the easiest ways to avoid mail clutter is to sort it before you even bring it inside your home. When you check your mail, organize it into three piles: 1. Bills – To Pay, 2. To Do – To Read & Act Upon/Schedule 3. To File for future reference.

Add drawer dividers to your kitchen drawers. Dividers keep the pencils, pens, paper clips and other items in neat compartments for easy access.

Organize your shelves with baskets or boxes. If you have bookshelves, get small-to-medium-sized baskets and use them to hold hobby items, magazines, toys and other odds and ends. Stowing these items on your shelves keeps them out of sight but within easy reach.

If everything has a place, it will be easier to put things back. Continue on to the rest of the house. Be sure to revisit the areas again, and de-clutter.  Have a 10 minute clean-up times throughout the day to keep on top of it.  With practice, you can live clutter free.
